April was Autism Awareness month and with that, the STARS (SASED’s Teaching for Autism: Reflecting Success) program helped run concessions stands during various events at Jefferson Middle School.
The concession stand was started this year by the STARS classroom to work on vocational skills involving sorting into categories, money math, and social skills.
Students are responsible for: stocking bags of chips, purchasing items during outings, creating signs to advertise cost, running the concession stand on a rotating schedule, checking inventory, and setting up the concession stand for each game/event.
· Open during the basketball and volleyball seasons 3:30-4:30
· Profits from the concession stand go towards funding community outings
This year, we’ve been able to save enough money to budget for a movie, and lunch at McDonald’s and Portillo’s!! When choosing what to spend money on, students work on budgeting, researching outings, and the ability to compromise/advocate for their preferred outing.
Jefferson students and staff spent the month of April celebrating Autism Awareness and ended with donating $600 to Easter Seals after all of the fundraising was done throughout the month. One of the fundraising opportunities was a t-shirt designed by a student. There were many options and the winner was voted on by the students and sold to help raise money for Autism Awareness. Karen Garcia was the designer of this year’s winning t-shirt.
