Determining Exclusion (Updated March 24, 2022)
If you test positive for COVID-19 (exclusion)
Everyone, regardless of vaccination status, must do the following:
- Stay home for a minimum of five (5) days and a maximum of 10 days after the first day of symptoms or the specimen collection date from positive viral test for asymptomatic
- Continue to wear a mask around others for five more days after returning to
Individuals may return to school after five days if asymptomatic or if fever-free without fever reducing medication for 24 hours, diarrhea/vomiting have ceased for 24 hours, and other symptoms have improved.
Be aware that your clinical provider may determine that you need a longer period of isolation based on certain underlying clinical conditions such as a weakened immune system.
If you have COVID-19- like symptoms (exclusion)
Everyone, regardless of vaccination status, must immediately be excluded from school until:
- Receiving a negative test result (home, rapid or PCR) that confirms the symptoms are not attributable to COVID-19; or
- For a minimum of five days and a maximum of 10 days until fever free without fever reducing medication for 24 hours, diarrhea/vomiting have ceased for 24 hours, and other symptoms have
Individuals must continue to wear a mask around others for five more days after returning to school.
Those testing positive should be excluded from school and follow guidance for persons testing positive.
If you were exposed to someone with COVID-19 and have no COVID-19-like symptoms (exclusion)
The following people are close contacts* who must be excluded from school:
- Students and staff who are not fully vaccinated (completed primary series).
- Students and staff aged 18 years and older who have received primary COVID-19 vaccine doses but have not received a booster dose when eligible (“unboosted”).

Dear parents and guardians,
I’m writing to share with you news that the isolation and quarantine period for students and staff members sick with COVID-19 or considered a close contact has been reduced to five days.
Late Friday, the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) confirmed that schools may implement this guidance now. Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois State Board of Education, and the DuPage County Health Department have all adopted CDC guidance for P-12 schools that halves the isolation and quarantine period. The Centers for Disease Control updated its guidance for P-12 schools on January 6.
The isolation and quarantine period for students and staff members sick with COVID-19 or considered a close contact has been reduced to five days as long as symptoms have improved and a person has been fever-free for at least 24 hours.
As a result, effective Monday, January 10, 2022, District 45 will implement the updated guidance. On Monday, we will contact staff, students and families who are currently excluded from school due to COVID-19 with a revised return to school plan. Please follow your current exclusion dates until an updated plan is provided to you.
Today’s announcement does not change the state of Illinois’ mask requirement for anyone inside school buildings. The Governor’s indoor mask mandate for school is still in effect until further notice.

We are currently working to update our District 45 COVID-19 Health & Safety Guidance to reflect the updates from the CDC & IDPH. We realize there are many individual circumstances that are impacted by these updated guidelines, and we will continue to work with our community to make sure everyone understands how this update impacts them and their families in relation to school.

Le escribo para compartir con usted la noticia de que el período de aislamiento y cuarentena para los estudiantes y miembros del personal enfermos con COVID-19 o considerados como un contacto cercano se ha reducido a cinco días.
El viernes por la noche, el Departamento de Salud del Condado de DuPage (DCHD) confirmó que las escuelas pueden implementar esta guía ahora. El Departamento de Salud Pública de Illinois, la Junta de Educación del Estado de Illinois y el Departamento de Salud del Condado de DuPage han adoptado la guía de los CDC para las escuelas P-12 que reduce a la mitad el período de aislamiento y cuarentena.
